The University has the following internal challenges:

• Lack of strategic focus due to absence of a strategic plan
• Grossly inadequate funding, with its potential to adversely affect productivity and academic excellence
• Inadequate infrastructure for teaching, learning and research (e.g. lecture halls/theatres, classrooms, laboratories/studios, library, office accommodation, etc)
• Inadequate municipal services (e.g. water, electricity, toilets, shopping malls, cafeterias, business centres, etc)
• Poor information and communication technology (ICT) and low level of computer use
• Lack of adequate academic staff for some programmes, leading to high student-teacher ratio
• Absence of research grants and an institutional arrangement for research
• Absence of an institutional arrangement for extension
• Poor quality roads and drainage
• Inadequate recreational and social facilities
• Limited access to land for development
• Occasional disruption of the University academic calendar
• Poor work attitude by some staff
