Prof. Ikenna Onyido, FAS, Vice-Chancellor.Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) is the youngest of the three Federal Government Agricultural Universities in Nigeria. These universities were created to provide agricultural teaching, research, and extension services to the major Agroecological zones of Nigeria (Arid, Derived Savannah, Rainforest, and Savannah). The MOUAU mandate is to support agricultural productivity in the Rainforest Zone covering the southeast and south-south geopolitical zones located southeast of the Niger River valley.

The name of the University was changed from Federal University of Agriculture, Umudike to Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) in 2000. MOUAU is a name that chimes well with our mission to be a centre of excellence, in learning, creativity and enterprise promoting economic, socio-cultural and political well-being.

Our distinctive mission is to combine academic rigour with imaginative approach. Students and other stakeholders will be committing time, energy and money, in expectation for a good quality products guarantee that will broaden and enrich their personal horizons and their long-term future, thus making the choice of the university imperative.

Here, in MOUAU, we offer more than 50 non-degree, undergraduate and postgraduate programmes designed to meet national and international needs of Nigerian and African students in today’s globalised agricultural and allied job market. We are proud that a student can choose from courses that cut across various fields of agriculture and related resource programmes at this University, which has attained reputation for innovation and creative industry.

In addition to our excellent teaching and research, we target offering our students a great lifestyle with good facilities and top quality halls of residence.

As one of our many contributions, our long-term plan is to use science and high-tech Information and Communications Technology to attract and retain youths and women in the rural areas of the Niger Delta region through our planned Multipurpose Agricultural Business Project, which will create major new centres of development to address the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) of poverty alleviation and enhancement of the quality of life. We are committed to further investment on more students’ hostels at the University campus and working towards improving and enhancing existing facilities This booklet outlines the range and quality of our programmes all of which benefit from a strong research and extension output, new staff and accelerated teaching and research centres of excellence as well as cutting edge facilities. MOUAU stands for a new vision and bright future for all agricultural and rural developers. The booklet is issued for the general guidance of students entering the University and their parents, our funding agencies and our friends. We are committed to taking the University forward in a new direction. In this regard, the quality of the student    experience is of paramount importance to our plans.
